“In Spain, the dead are more alive than the dead of any other country in the world”- Federico Garcia Lorca. Spain is more than just running with the bulls. This European country can be enjoyed at any time of the year. From modern architecture to ancient dwellings, high mountains to the Mediterranean coast, Spain pleases the eyes with every inch of the land. Sight is not the only sense that will be pleased on your Spanish vacation- food, drink, music and dance- you name it and Spain either invented it or has it. The best time to vacation in Spain is May through September. In the south of Spain, April and October are considered ideal times to vacation in Spain. Cities to visit are Barcelona, Bilbao, Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, San Sebastian, Santander, Seville, and Valencia. Destinations to keep in mind are Rias Baixas, La Rioja for the fossilized dinosaur tracks, and Ronda with the oldest still-used bullring in Spain. While planning your Spain vacation be sure to check the calendar of local activities at various cities you might visit- most festivals occur in May, but there are others that spring up throughout the year. Spanish is the main language of Spain, but if differs in pronunciation from the Spanish spoken in Latin America and the Spanish most Americans are taught. Spanish cuisine is described as light with a great deal of vegetables, meat and fish. With such authentic cuisine drinks should be considered to complement your pallet. Cava, sherry and sangria are all popular in Spain. And there’s also wine, which is made and considered a big tradition throughout the country. The euro is the currency of Spain. Expect to use it in a variety of shops and markets all along the country. Keep in mind that shops do close in the afternoon for a few hours so a siesta can be had by all of the employees. Siestas are a tradition in Spain and much of Europe and highly recommended to the weary traveler who wants to take in all of Spain, especially since there is more to see than just running bulls.
