Massachusetts is one of the oldest states in the U.S., and it is located in the picturesque and historic New England region. A vacation to “The Bay State”, as it has been called because of the three large bays which shape the coastline, will prove to be an excellent travel excursion. Activities and sights to visit are never in short supply in this state, and with cities such as Boston, Gloucester, and Plymouth to chose from, along with one of the three bays and numerous outdoor opportunities, the only problem you will have on your vacation is having to leave.
The three bays which shape the Massachusetts coastline are Massachusetts Bay (near Boston), Cape Cod Bay, on the eastern shore, and Buzzard’‘s Bay, on the south coast. Cape Cod may be the most recognized of the three bays because of its association with the Kennedy family.
Boston, known as the “Athens of America”, is full of museums, world-class restaurants, and world renowned academic institutions, not to mention dozens of glorious historical buildings.
Once in Massachusetts, the activities are endless, depending on what time of year you may visit. If the weather is too dreary and you wish to stay inside, check out some of the 170+ art, history, and sporting museums, or some of the 50+ theatres and performing arts center. If you feel like getting out, then do it on a bike! Bicycling is very popular and there are many paths and routes throughout the state. Skiing is also an enjoyable Massachusetts activity, and you can check out many different locations, such as Blandford, Jiminy Peak, and Wachusett Mountain. Hike the Bay Circuit Trail or fish in designated areas.
When to travel to Massachusetts? That’‘s entirely up to you. What activities would you like to enjoy on your vacation? Winters can be quite cold and full of snow- perfect for skiing. June and September are good, but peak season is in July through August so expect higher prices and crowded areas. Fall colors begin in September through October- which is always a wondrous vision, especially for hikers and bikers.
For dinner have a New England clambake. For drinks stop by an Irish pub in Boston, or have some warm cider at one of the many orchards. The official currency is the U.S. Dollar, and the official language is English. No matter where you are be aware of your surroundings and be safe. And have a great New England vacation!
