Fiji. The name is so simple, but there is nothing simple about the cultures and land that makes up Fiji. The cultural influence is a diverse blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indians, Chinese and European cultures. Fiji has over 300 islands in its archipelago, 110 of which are inhabited. The best time to go to Fiji is anytime you want, though the dry season from May to October is considered the best time due to it being cooler, and less of a risk of tropical cyclones. Fiji is the product of volcanic mountains and clear warm tropical waters. The coral reefs housed in these azure waters draw divers and snorkelers year-round. Fiji is also known for tropical rainforests, coconut plantations and pristine beaches. Fiji has its own time zone placing it "ahead" of most of the world. It also boasts as being a travel destination that is malaria and terrorism-free- that is something that seems remarkably rare these days. Once you get to Fiji, where should you go? Viti Levu is the largest island in Fiji. Fiji’‘s highest mountain, Tomanivi, is located on Viti Levu’‘s east coast. Nadi, is on the western side of Viti Levu, and it is considered the transit stop to most of Fiji’‘s destinations because of its International Airport or one of its many ferries. Suva, the capital of Fiji, is on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, and there are many fine restaurants and nice hotels located in this bustling city. Fiji’‘s landscape is considered rugged terrain, so if you would like to bicycle be sure to find a rugged bike. The roads are considered quite dangerous for tourists to be driving themselves around, but buses are available, along with open or canvas topped carriers to be taken through Fiji’‘s interior for sightseeing. There are temples to see, forests to hike through and beaches to lie on. The official language of Fiji is English, and the official currency is the Fijian dollar. The unofficial drink is the yaqona (yang-go-na), and is also known as "kava". The cuisine is fresh and interesting, particularly the kokoda, which is local fish or seafood marinated in lemon and coconut milk.
