Bonaire is most renowned for its diving, so if you are looking for a vacation that has the island to relax on and the waters to dive in, then Bonaire is your perfect vacation destination.
The Caribbean island of Bonaire is located just a short distance north of Venezuela. It is a flat, river less island that is famous for its diving spots- just look at the car tags when you get there. The island is full of white sandy beaches and very few vegetation. Once you get to Bonaire, you will have ample opportunity to scuba dive (obviously), snorkel, fish, kite board, bicycle the island, sea kayaking, sail, or bird watch. Once you have done it all there are a few shops to visit for some shopping and souvenir purchasing. There are many restaurants, but not many fast food places. Traditional Bonaire cuisine is full of fresh seafood, which was probably caught the day you happen to order it. Try the conch, wahoo or rock lobster. Bobbejan’‘s is a weekend-only barbecue spot. When searching for a place to eat or shop, be sure to keep in mind the local siesta, which occurs between 2-3. Maybe this will be a good time for you to take a nap on the beach, or watch the wild iguanas and flamingos.
The climate is tropical marine, keeping the island’‘s temperature around 82 degrees Fahrenheit all year. The best time to travel to Bonaire is May to December when the rates come down. Cruise ships crowd the ports from October to April. If you would like to go in July and the rates are not an issue then go then- this wonderful island is not in the hurricane belt so the hurricane season will not affect your travels.
The official language in Bonaire is Dutch, though English is common. The official currency is the Netherlands Antilles Guilder. The unofficial dessert is island made ice cream and the unofficial drink is ice cold water. No matter where you are in the world be aware of your surroundings. And have fun on your vacation!
