What happens when you mix your ideal English vacation with your ideal Caribbean vacation? Barbados happens. Come to Barbados and visit the “Little England” of the Caribbean. Barbados is northeast of Venezuela and it is portrayed as “Little England” because of its association as a British colony. But don’‘t expect just fish and chips, a cold and dreary climate, and kidney pies. Expect the “Flying fish cutters” (fish sandwich), drier and sunnier climates (particularly in early spring), and some of the purest water you will ever taste. There’‘s also rum. Bajans, the name associated with Barbados natives, are more conservative than most people would expect. Keep that in mind when you pack only your bikini top and a miniskirt. Not that you won’‘t have any fun in Barbados- Southern Barbados (particularly St. Lawrence Gap) offers a more entertaining area full of bars and restaurants. Oistins has a famous Friday fish fry on the beach. Bathesda has the best-known surfing spot on the island (The Soup Bowl) and several tide pools you can soak in until your skin turns all pruney. Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados, and a port for cruise ships and tons of duty-free shops. The Barbados Museum is also in Bridgetown, perfect for any history buffs. There’‘s also the Waterfront Cafe, which has live music every night. If you are driving around, drive on the left. If you are taking a taxi, negotiate before you get in. The official language is English. The official currency is the Barbados Dollar. The unofficial drink is rum and the Bajan cuisine is delicious- both spicy and bland, but in a good way. Try the pepperpot- you will not be disappointed. December to May is peak season, so book your travel times early. Be sure to always be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are in the world. Have a great time in Barbados! Share your memories and pictures with us!
